The park extends for 8 miles along the Cimarron Canyon between Tolby Creek and Ute Park. The Palisades Sill forms spectacular cliffs above the Cimarron River here.Sugarite Canyon State Park Sugarite Canyon State Park is Raton's own little haven, located just 15 minutes from town. The nature enthusiast will appreciate the abundance of wildlife, birds, butterflies, and wildflowers among the lakes, creeks, forests, and meadows. Nearly all outdoor recreation activities are possible here: Fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and camping. Sugarite Canyon State Park is home to Lakes Alice and Maloya. We highly recommend the Coal Camp self-guided tour at the Visitor's Center, where you can imagine the active camp where thousands of people and miners once lived in a town created solely to mine coal.Capulin Volcano Part of the 8,000 square mile Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, Capulin Volcano showcases the volcanic geology of northeastern New Mexico. The views are spectacular day or night, with views of 4 different states from the volcanic rim and one of the darkest night skies in the country. Whether it's a quick stop or a day's trip, enjoy exploring the landscape of this unique volcano!Climax Canyon Nature Trail Climax Canyon Park includes the bottom of Climax Canyon, the three-mile long Climax Canyon Nature Trail, an old road that’s now designated for off-road vehicles and horses, a portion of the Old Pass Road, Goat Hill with it’s giant flag and RATON sign, a group picnic area and short hiking path, and the Iridium Layer.Shuler Theater The historic Shuler Theater in downtown Raton, New Mexico, is a state landmark and remains the center for performing arts in northeastern New Mexico. We have included it here because a host of events are held by Raton Mainstreet both on S 1st Street and in the downtown area. It is listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties as well as the National Register of Historic Properties. In 2021 ownership of the theater changed hands, with the first new show on stage being a live comedy performance.
