Sugarite Canyon State Park
Sugarite Canyon State Park is Raton's own little haven, located just 15 minutes from town. The nature enthusiast will appreciate the abundance of wildlife, birds, butterflies, and wildflowers among the lakes, creeks, forests, and meadows. Nearly all outdoor recreation activities are possible here: Fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and camping. Sugarite Canyon State Park is home to Lakes Alice and Maloya. In addition to self-directed activities, the park also hosts the annual Polar Bear Plunge, Christmas on the Chicorica, and a full summer calendar of classes and events. We highly recommend the Coal Camp self-guided tour at the Visitor's Center, where you can imagine the active camp where thousands of people and miners once lived in a town created solely to mine coal.
